Studies on Laser Assisted Composite Surfacing of Commercial Metals and Alloys for Tribological Application: In the present study, attempts have been made to develop ceramic/intermetallic dispersed metal-matrix composite layer on the surface of commercially pure aluminium, stainless steel, mild steel and magnesium alloy (AZ91) by melting the surface with a continuous wave CO2 laser along with pre/co-deposition of silicon carbide (on Al and mild steel), titanium boride (on Al and stainless steel) and Mg2Ni (on AZ91) to improve wear resistance property. Followed by laser processing, a detailed characterization of the composite layer has been undertaken and correlated with laser parameters. Mechanical properties of the composite layer (microhardness and wear resistance) have also been evaluated. Finally, the influence of surface coating on corrosion resistance property was also evaluated.
