The Department of Chemistry, the brainchild of Sir J.C. Ghosh, a pioneering chemist and the first director of the institute was started in 1951. The department is now actively pursuing research embracing both basic and applied areas of chemistry. The sponsored projects undertaken by the department include Novel Molecular Composites, projects on Nano-particle with British collaboration, Annulations of Novel Acridness and Benzocarbazole Derivatives in collaboration with Bayer (Germany ), Uniroyal Chemical Company (Canada) and Glaxo (U.K). Various consultancies deal with biological testing, development of chemical compounds etc.
