Dynamics of Foodgrain Production and Sustainability in West Bengal: An Empirical Analysis

DYNAMICS OF FOODGRAIN PRODUCTION AND SUSTAINABILITY IN WEST BENGAL: AN EMPIRICAL ANALYSIS. : The introduction of modern technology in mid-1960s, the phenomenon known as the “Green Revolution”, has had a dramatic impact on food production in many developing countries including India. Recently most of the green revolution regions have reached a plateau and are now sustained only with diminishing productivity due to improper use of modern technologies. Against this background, the present study is an attempt to explain in detail different aspects of foodgrain production in West Bengal during the period 1968-69 to 2002-03. This work especially puts an emphasis in assessing the growth rate and the impact of modern technologies on foodgrain production. At the same time the assessment of the sustainability in agriculture is also done, based on both the economic indicator and the social indicator. From the analysis, it is found that growth rate of foodgrain production was much higher in 1980s as compared to 1990s. The use of all the modern technologies had positive impact on foodgrain production except pesticides. Among the modern technologies, HYV area has the highest positive impact on foodgrain production. It is also found that West Bengal’s foodgrain production is characterized by decreasing returns to scale indicating that unsustainability in agriculture has been existing in West Bengal and it will remain in future as well. It is found that the awareness level of farmers regarding all the modern technologies and education has significantly positive impact on sustainable foodgrain practice. However the awareness level of farmers regarding all the modern technologies to achieve sustainable foodgrain production is only at a moderate level. It revealed that the procedure or practice of sustainable foodgrain production is not well known to the farmers.
