Mechanism and Conditions of Emplacement of the Bolangir Anorthosite Pluton,Eastern Ghats Belt, India

The Thesis Embodies Results Of Structural-Lithologic Mapping, Micro-Structural And Textural Analysis, Chemical Analysis Of Bulk Rocks And Minerals, And Mineral-Melt Phase Equilibrium Calculations Carried Out (2004-2009) In The Bolangir Anorthosite Complex To Understand The Mechanics And Conditions Of Emplacement Of The Pluton In The Context Of Eastern Ghats Orogeny During The Neoproterozoic. The Pluton Evolved Via Plagioclasedominated Fractionation Of Mantle-Derived High-Al Gabbro Magma Crustally-Contaminated During Ascent. Silica-Undersaturated Fe-Rich Melanocratic Rocks Highly Enriched In Ti, Zr, Ree (Ftzr) At The Folded Margins Of The Pluton Are Residual Melts Produced By Highdegree (>90%) Of Anorthosite Crystallization. The Ascent–Emplacement Of The Hot (~1100 Cۥ) Pluton With Its Veneer Of Variably Deformed Crustally-Derived Granitoids Is Synchronous With Nnw-Sse Directed Crustal Shortening. The Syn-D3 Emplacement Of The Pluton Post-Dates Two Older Granulite Facies Deformation Events (D1 And D2) Recorded By Host Gneisses. During Pluton Emplacement, Stress Was Accommodated By Dislocation Creep In Plagioclase Following Melt Solidification/Expulsion In The Pluton Interior; By Contrast Plagioclase In The Highly-Strained Melt-Bearing Pluton Margin Responded To The Stress By A Combination Of Melt Present Diffusion Creep, Granular Flow Of Plagioclase And Dislocation Creep. The E-W Crustal Shortening Deformation (D4) Manifested By N-Trending Folds And Zonal-To-Spaced Shears Common To Intrusives And Host Gneisses Was Responsible For The Segregation-Emplacement Of The Ftzr Melts Discordant To The Margin-Parallel Foliation In The Pluton. Sub-Solidus Garnet Coronae And Its Decomposition To Orthopyroxeneplagioclase Intergrowths In Anorthosite/Ftzr, And Delicate Reaction Textures In Calcsilicate Gneisses Are Correlated With Post-D4 Post-Magmatic Cooling-Decompression (700- 950ºC, 8-6 Kbar) Of The Intrusives And The Host Gneisses (Although Garnet Corona In Anorthosite/Ftzr Induced By Re-Heating Is Not Precluded). The Change In Stress Field From Nne-Ssw Compression (D3) To E-W Compression (D4) With Anorthosite Plutons At Supra-Solidus State Located Along The Northern-Western Fringe Of The Eastern Ghats Province Is Significant Because (A) Ftzrs Are Demonstrably Of Grenvillian Age, But (B) The Eastern Ghats Province Hosting The Anorthosite Plutons Was Not Accreted To The Indian Craton Until The Early Paleozoic.
