Spray Column Scrubbers Gained Importance In Small And Medium Scale Industries As They Are Simple In Design And Lowest Energy Consuming Scrubbers. They Are Capable Of Scrubbing Simultaneously Particulates And Gaseous Pollutants. In The Present Investigation, A Spray-Cum-Bubble Column Has Been Designed And Fabricated To Investigate The Scrubbing Of Air Pollutants Synthetic Flue Gas At Room Temperature As Well As Elevated Temperatures. The New Scrubber Has Been Designed To Overcome The Shortcomings Of The Available Wet Scrubbers And Operates With Relatively Higher Capacity. The Spray Section In The Lower Part Of The Equipment Conditions The Dust And Removes A Part Of Dust And So2. The Investigation Has Two Distinct Parts, The First Part Deals With Hydrodynamic Characterization Of Spray Column With And Without Internals And Spray-Cum-Bubble Column (Scbcs) Under Various Operating Conditions. The Second Part Deals With Performance Studies For Removal Of Particulates (Fly-Ash) And So2, Individually And Simultaneously In The Above Systems. In The Hydrodynamic Studies The Pressure Drop, Liquid Holdup And Droplet Size Distribution For Various Operating Conditions In The Spray And Spray-Cum-Bubble Column Are Carried Out. The Pressure Drops In The Spray Column With And Without Internals And (Scbcs) Are Found To Increase With Increase In Both Gas And Liquid Flow Rates. Maximum Pressure Drop Of 1959.6 N/M2 Is Found In The Scbcs. The Holdup Studies Revealed That The Liquid Holdup Increases With Increase In Gas And Liquid Flow Rates In The Spray And Scbcs. Particulate Removal Efficiency In All The Three Scrubbers Found To Increase With Increase In Gas And Liquid Flow Rates And Solid Loading Rates. Maximum Efficiency Of 99.28% Is Achieved In The Spray Cum Bubble Column For 5.0 X 10-3 Kg /M3 Solid Concentration Under Optimal Condition. However The So2 Removal Efficiency Of Spray Scrubbers Found To Increase With Liquid Flow Rate And So2 Gas Concentration. Maximum Efficiency Of 99.82% Is Achieved By The Scbcs In Scrubbing 1200 Ppm Of So2 Gas. Simultaneous Removal Efficiencies Of Particulates And So2 In Spray Column And Spray-Cum-Bubble Column Found To Have Better Efficiency Than Individual Removal Efficiencies Of The Pollutants. Mathematical Models Have Been Developed And Simulated For The Estimation Of The Removal Efficiency Of Particulates And So2 Gas By Spray Scrubber For Different Operating Variables. The Results Obtained Are Found To Have Good Agreement With The Experimental Values. Xv
